During the Miss USA 2016 pageant on Sunday, Miss California, Nadia Mejia, was asked about inequality and how we should narrow the gap between the rich and the poor in this country. It’s a tough question to answer in one sound bite and she succumbed to the pressures of the big stage, giving a fairly rambling, nervous answer. We forgive you, Nadia.

Miss Mejia (who happens to be the daughter of 90s pop-star Rico Suave) couldn’t quite figure out income inequality. And to be fair, the United States hasn’t seemed to have figured it out either. What is the answer to income inequality? At Labor 411, we think it begin with purchasing goods and services from companies that treat their workers fairly; meaning a fair day’s pay and even benefits. If businesses are rewarded for treating their workers well, it will become a trend. So let’s get started. Let’s build a better middle class.

Miss California, you can help, too.
